Albany, NY, 4/22/09 – The Nutrition Consortium of NYS, a statewide anti-hunger organization, honors Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 1:00pm in the Well of the Legislative Office Building in Albany. Krueger and Wright receive New York State Anti-Hunger Champion awards for their commitment and dedication to the needs of New Yorkers who struggle to put food on the table.
“The Nutrition Consortium of NYS commends Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright for their leadership on anti-hunger issues in the NYS legislature. These members were critical to restoring funds for the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) in the state budget, a program which will now continue to help thousands of New Yorkers to receive food stamp benefits, and bring millions of federal food stamp dollars into the state. Senator Krueger and Assemblyman Wright are further commended for introducing and supporting legislation to improve access to the Food Stamp Program in New York State—legislation that will result in more food on the table for New Yorkers who are struggling to make ends meeting during this difficult economic time,” says Ron Soloway, Board Chair of the Nutrition Consortium of NYS.
Senator Liz Krueger says, “I am glad that the legislature and governor recognized how important it is that we ensure access to food and nutrition programs for all New Yorkers who need them. I have worked with the Nutrition Consortium for decades, going back to my days as an advocate, and am deeply honored that I have been able to continue to support these critical programs as a Senator.”
“Preserving the funding for NOEP was a budgetary triumph for the New York State Assembly Social Services Committee this session. By preserving access to food stamp outreach and application assistance, we are allowing for millions of dollars of federal monies to flow into our most vulnerable communities, something much needed during this current fiscal crisis. I look forward to closely working with the Nutrition Consortium in the future, together keeping up the fight to assist our State's neediest residents,” states Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright, Chairman of the State Assembly Standing Committee on Social Services.
